汉译英的技巧(3)
三、词义广狭
汉英语言中都有一些词在意义上有广、狭之分，即有些是泛指的词，有些是特指的词，翻译时要注意这些区别。
例1：“酒”，一种是广义泛指的“酒”，一种是特指某种“酒”。
他从不喝酒。He never drink wine.(wine 泛指)
好酒不怕巷子深。Good wine speaks for itself.(wine 泛指)
他不爱喝烈性酒。He doesn't like spirits.(spirits 特指）
英语中特指的酒还有：
drink 酒类，也可指饮料，如soft drink (果子汁)
liquor 经过蒸馏而酿成的酒。
wine 由果汁制成的酒，多指葡萄酒，如white wine, red wine等。
spirits 指酒精含量高的烈性酒。
beer / malt liquor 用麦芽制成的啤酒。
ale 指淡色啤酒，酒精比beer高。
mum /stout 都是烈性啤酒，mum是德国的烈性啤酒，stout是黑啤酒。
例2：“思想”
我们要破除迷信，解放思想。
We should do away with all superstitions and emancipate the mind. (泛指)
这本书的思想内容好。
The book has a good ideological content.(泛指)
他早就有回家的思想。
He has long had the idea of going home.(特指)
他老了，思想有点跟不上了。
He is old and lags behind in his understanding.(特指)
